ON1 has announced that they will update Photo 10 and are calling their new product “ON1 Photo RAW”.
The description of Photo RAW lists “Instant RAW editing with no import” as one of the features, but Photo 10.5 opens .CR2 and .DNG RAW files with no noticeable difficulty.
ON1 is offering a $20 discount for those who pre-order the software before the end of August, and promise it will be available for download some time this fall.
There are a couple of features that sound interesting, such as: “Edit multiple versions of the same photo”, and “Edit multiple photos all at once”.
The upgrade price of $99.99 (or $79.99 if you pre-order) still seems steep for a companion editing utility. $119.99 is the cost without the upgrade. (The pre-order price for the ON1 Photo 10 Upgrade was $90 just one year ago.)
For those following our High Dynamic Range discussion, I asked ON1 if this new RAW version of Photo would include an automated multiple exposure merge capability, such as Photoshop or Luminance HDR. I was told that it will not, but that it is a popular feature request that they may add to future versions of the program.
ON1 has released a tutorial video showing techniques that can be used with ON1 Photo 10 for HDR processing, with some adaptation. If anyone would like an example, please send me a comment or email. I normally use Luminance HDR.
